Overview

Our curriculum is designed to address the developmental needs of children as individuals and help them develop at their own pace. Each program builds on the one before it, providing challenges appropriate to both age and skill levels. Language, mathematics, spatial learning, self-discovery, music and art — they’re all incorporated into the Montessori approach.

Montessori Curriculum

As children get older, they tend to see things that adults find ordinary as very interesting and special. Practical life exercises like sorting, pouring, washing dishes or polishing shoes absorb them completely.

At The Joyce Goonesekera Montessori House of Children, we recognize this as the beginning of control and coordination of mind and body. That’s why our learning revolves around tangible experiences. Children use concrete materials to learn math; movable alphabets to explore language; and cubes, cylinders and other objects to categorize, find spatial relationships and more.

Our broad-based Montessori Program includes: Practical Life Activities, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, Cultural Awareness, Science and Nature, Music and Movement and outdoor play.

There are no traditional “grades” at a The Joyce Goonesekera Montessori House of Children school. Instead, directresses closely follow a child’s progress, recording it in a daily journal. Through this and special portfolio projects, directresses give parents a detailed account of their child’s progress and areas that need improvement thrice yearly.

Art and Craft Activities

We approach art and craft projects with a noncompetitive, creative outlook. Instead of having children imitate the teacher-led project, we focus on facilitating the art creation process. Below is a sampling of work from our budding artists

Extended Day Programme

In order to assist working parents, an extended programme has been introduced at The Joyce Goonesekera Montessori House of Children. The extended day programme is limited to children enrolled at our House of Children. Here too the curriculum has been designed to address the developmental needs of children as individuals and help them develop at their own pace

Activities include singing, story time, art, craft, outdoor play and computer-based learning.
